Currently, the automobile sector in India is undergoing an abrupt transformation. This has stirred confusion among people planning to buy a car with their hard-earned money. Electric vehicles (EVs), ethanol blend petrol (E20), petrol, diesel, or hybrid – what is the future of India?
A few years ago, if you wanted to buy a car, the choice was simple – petrol or diesel. However, presently that’s not the case. Forget about models and their variants; one has to carefully consider which technology the vehicle is based on.
Government’s stand on EV and E20:
On the one hand, the Government of India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is encouraging electric vehicles. On the other hand, the same government is enthusiastically promoting ethanol-blended petrol. Not to mention diesel and hybrid!
What is an electric vehicle (EV)?
An electric vehicle is a vehicle driven by electric power. It has no internal combustion engine (ICE), fuel tank, fuel injector, spark plugs (petrol cars), engine oil, engine oil filter, exhaust system, etc.
Instead, an EV has a battery pack, electric motor, power electronics (inverter and controller), single-speed reduction gear (in most EVs), on-board charger, and charging port.
What is E20?
Simply put, it is a fuel made up of 80 percent petrol and 20 percent ethanol. Ethanol, in turn, is made up of sugarcane and some other crops.
Confused buyer!
Now, a person who is planning to buy a car is confused about which one he she should buy, keeping in mind the future.
What if he buys a petrol or diesel car and the government bans it? What if he buys an E20-compliant car and the government increases ethanol blending to 30 percent (E30 or E85)?
Moreover, if a person buys an EV, there is no proper coverage of charging stations throughout the country!
