Full story of JKLF chief Yasin Malik | Kashmir Terrorism, NIA Case & Life Sentence | Documentary by Anurag Sason

Documentary on Yasin Malik: Who is Yasin Malik? Once a most talked-about face of Kashmir, a person who took up arms and later announced non-violence, and today serving a life sentence in Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Born on 3 April 1966, Yasin Malik is a Kashmiri separatist leader. He is a former militant who advocates the separation of Kashmir from both India and Pakistan. He is the chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), which was the first militant group to spearhead armed militancy in the Kashmir Valley.

Malik renounced violence

In 1994, Malik renounced violence and adopted peaceful methods to come to a settlement of the Kashmir conflict. In May 2022, the JKLF chief pleaded guilty to multiple charges of criminal conspiracy and waging war against the state and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

2017 terror funding case against Yasin Malik

In 2017, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a case of terror funding against various separatist leaders. In 2019, it named Malik and four others in a charge sheet filed.

The NIA charged them with receiving funds from Pakistan to carry out terrorist activities in Kashmir.

On 10 May 2022, Malik pled guilty to the charges framed against him, and on 19 May 2022, he was convicted by the NIA Court on charges of conspiracy and waging war against the state. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

In a latest development this year, in June 2026, the state investigation agency (SIA) of Jammu and Kashmir police accused Malik of commanding the 1990 killing of Sarla Bhat. In Srinagar, it filed a chargesheet against him and four others at a TADA/POTA court. Earlier, the agency had raided the homes of several JKLF members, including Malik, as part of the 2025 investigation.

About Sarla Bhat

In April 1990, Sarla Bhat, a Kashmiri Hindu woman, was abducted and murdered after being tortured and reportedly raped by Muslim militants of the JKLF during the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. According to reports, Bhat’s killing had coincided with the hospitalisation of Malik at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), where Bhat worked as a nurse.

Reportedly, Bhat’s murder was related to the arrest of a JKLF-affiliated employee at SKIMS, and Bhat was framed as an informant because she was a Kashmiri Pandit.
