Gyanvapi mosque is encircled in controversy. It is being said that it was constructed on the ruins of a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva by Raja Todar Mal. Claims are being made that the temple was destroyed by the sixth emperor of the Mughal empire, Aurangzeb. Reportedly, in 1669, the temple was destroyed and a mosque was built in its place . However, a question arises that why the Mughal emperor decimated the temple? Was it religious intolerance (as it is being popularly believed)? Or there was some other reason?
