What is the truth behind the Gyanvapi mosque? Is it built on the ruins of an ancient Shiva temple? Yes, it is! Reportedly, the temple was built between 1575 and 1600 by Raja Todar Mal. He was one of the nine navratnas of Mughal emperor Akbar. It is being said that around 1669, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb destroyed the temple and ordered the construction of a mosque. The mosque derived its name from Gyan Vapi well (means well of knowledge) which is located adjacent to it in Banaras city of Uttar Pradesh.
