About Parkash Singh Badal
Parkash Singh Badal was born on 8 December 1927, in Abul Khurana village in the Sri Muktsar Sahib district of Punjab, India. He belonged to a Jatt Sikh family of the Dhillon Clan. The veteran politician graduated from Panjab University and College, Lahore, Pakistan.

Parkash Singh Badal’s political journey
He served as the 8th Chief Minister of Punjab from 1970 to 1971, from 1977 to 1980, from 1997 to 2002, and from 2007 to 2017, the longest-serving Chief Minister of Punjab to date.
In 1970, at the age of 43, he became the youngest chief minister of an Indian state.
From 1972 to 1977, 1980 to 1983, and from 2002 to 2007, he was also Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.
From March 28, 1977 – June 17, 1977, in the Morarji Desai ministry, he served as the 11th Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
Patron of Shiromani Akali Dal
Parkash Singh Badal was the patron of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a Sikh-centered regional political party. He was the president of the party from 1995 to 2008, and was replaced by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal. As the patron of the Akali Dal, he exercised a strong influence on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.
Padma Vibhushan Awardee
For his contributions toward politics, agriculture, infrastructure and service to India, he, in March 2015, was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian Government headed by Narendra Modi.
At Fortis Hospital in Mohali, Punjab, Badal died on 25 April 2023, aged 95, after a brief illness.
