INTERVIEW | Monday Talk | There has been an increase in human rights violations since Aam Aadmi Party government came to power in Punjab: BJP leader Kameshwar Gumber

Interview of Kameshwar Gumber: As per the United Nations, human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. However, in India, every now and then we have heard news about human rights violations. To talk about this serious topic, journalist Anurag Sason has an in-depth conversation with the state convenor of the Punjab BJP human rights cell Kameshwar Gumber.

Q1) How serious are human rights violations in Punjab?

Kameshwar Gumber: There have been constant violations of human rights in Punjab. There has been an increase in human rights violations since the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government came to power in the state.

Q2) What the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is doing for human rights in Punjab?

Kameshwar Gumber: We as a political and social organisation are constantly trying to perform our duties. Wherever necessary, we raise our voices and try to awaken the government. We are giving a positive environment to people so that they are aware of their human rights.

Q3) What about the human rights of late Shubhkaran Singh, the 22-year-old farmer from Bathinda who lost his life amid the ‘Dilli Chalo’ protest at the Khanauri border in February?

Kameshwar Gumber: Shubhkaran Singh had full human rights like any other person. The reason behind Shukan’s death should come out. The BJP is a responsible political party, and we believe that human rights are for everyone. A high-level committee must be formed to investigate the death of the young farmer.

Q4) In human rights violations, what kind of cases do you see most in Punjab?

Kameshwar Gumber: As per what I have seen and have come to know, cases related to police atrocities are being reported the most. There is a need to sensitise the cops. We will soon have a meeting with the governor of Punjab regarding this. There should be police sensitisation programs.

Q5) Tell us about the Punjab BJP human rights cell setup. Also, tell us how an aggrieved person can reach the cell.

Kameshwar Gumber: In total, we have about 32 cells in Punjab. 18-19 teams are fully functional.

Q6) What is the basic cause of human rights violations?

Kameshwar Gumber: It’s a chain reaction. Unemployment, rapidly, growing population, and the attitude of state governments are all responsible.

If we talk about all over India, there is a lack of awareness. Human rights commissions should work more proactively.

And I also want to urge people that “if you face human rights violations, please reach out.”
