Ramadan night markets in Delhi: Ramadan is considered a holy month in the Muslim community worldwide. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During this month, fasting, communal prayer, reflection, study of the Quran, charity, and strengthening community ties are observed.
The yearly observance of Ramadan lasts 29 to 30 days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next. The festival of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan after a crescent new moon has been sighted.
During the entire month of Ramadan, the Muslim community gets busy shopping from dusk to dawn! From clothes to crockery, they are busy buying almost everything. Shopping is mostly done after breaking fast in the evening and goes till late night/early morning.
Ramadan night markets in Delhi
In Delhi, to serve this very purpose, there are markets in Muslim-dominated areas – Batla House, Zakir Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, etc that remain open the entire night. For this, the shopkeepers take special permission.
To get firsthand experience, journalist Anurag Sason visited markets in Batla House and Zakir Nagar.

Situated in the Okhla Assembly constituency, Batla House is a densely populated residential locality and is known for its proximity to Jamia Millia Islamia University and vibrant local markets.
Famous for its nocturnal culinary scene during Ramadan, Zakir Nagar is a densely populated residential locality in South East Delhi. It is also near Jamia Millia Islamia. The place is known for its vibrant street food culture. It is famous for dishes like Nalli Nihari and kebab varieties. It is a Muslim-majority area with a mix of apartments and independent houses.
Pahalwan Ji Lassi Corner
Pahalwan Ji restaurant in Zakir Nagar is one of the famous eateries where you can find a wide variety of delicious food items. During Ramadan, the shop remains open until 6 am. Journalist Anurag Sason tried here Rabdi Falooda (Rs 100). It was seriously yum!

Also located in South East Delhi is Shaheen Bagh, a residential locality located along the Yamuna bank. In 2019-2020, it gained international prominence for its mostly women-led, sustained 101-day sit-in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). This place is also known for its bustling street food scene.
