Football-sized tumor removed! A team of doctors at the Government Royapettah Hospital, Kilpauk Medical College removed an 8kg abdominal tumor from a 47-year-old gentleman on 11 October (Wednesday). The patient hailing from Tambaram was suffering from intolerable abdominal pain for two months.
After consulting many hospitals, the patient finally came to Government Royapettah Hospital with pain and abdominal distension on October 10. At the time of admission, the tumor had reached substantial dimensions, measuring 30cm x 20cm causing significant abdominal discomfort and he had lost weight. Treatment started immediately and a CT scan showed a large heterogenous tumor below the liver, to the right of small bowel loops and large intestine were stuck to it.
The surgical oncology team of Government Royapettah Hospital removed the tumor after a 4.5-hour surgery, said Prof.Dr. R.Muthuselvan, MD.,(GM), the Dean of Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.
“After the surgery, it was a huge relief to the patient as if a heavy burden had been lifted off his shoulders,” he said, adding that if the tumor had not been removed, the potential consequences for the patient’s future were uncertain.
After the prolonged surgery, ably led by Prof S.Subbiah, HOD, Surgical Oncology, (with Dr. Jagadish Singh, Dr. Vijayalakshmi, and Anaesthesiologists Dr. Pranab Nirmal, Dr Paul Praveen and Dr Abinaya with Staff nurse Mrs Shamili, among others), the patient is on his way to recovery.
The Dean said during the surgery, the tumor was so large that the surgery was particularly challenging due to the lack of maneuvering space, which posed a risk of damaging critical blood vessels and organs.
However, the team was successful in removing the tumor safely with the help of an instrument called Thompson retractor availability of which is rare even in corporate hospitals.
Government Royapettah Hospital caters to around 14000 cancer patients every year, and the Center for Oncology deals with gynecological, head and neck, breast, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal cancers predominantly. The center also does advanced laparoscopic procedures to the benefit of patients. Since 2016, from 300 odd total number of advanced laparoscopic surgeries done, the number has risen now to 861.
The Dean requests the general public to utilize the facilities available at the institution for the betterment of their well-being.
