Explained: Why West Asia conflict is affecting LPG supply in India
LPG crisis in India: The Iran vs Israel-USA war, being fought in the Middle East, has sent its shockwaves to India in the form of an LPG crisis.
According to reports, a crisis has arisen for both domestic and commercial LPG cylinders in various parts of the country, with the Modi government assuring that the centre is closely monitoring the situation.
Why is the Iran vs Israel and USA war affecting LPG supplies in India?
For cooking gas, India is highly dependent on imports, with approximately 62% of the country’s LPG demand being met through imports. A considerable portion of these imports comes from Gulf countries and passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a strait between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and is predominantly controlled by Iran.
As a result of the battle, the route is disrupted, and India’s supply chain is being affected!
Top LPG suppliers to India (2024–2025)
Out of the total demand of roughly 31–32 million tonnes (MT), India imports roughly 20–21 MT of LPG every year.
| Rank | Country | Share – India’s LPG imports | Approx volume |
| 1 | UAE | ~41% | ~8.1 million tonnes |
| 2 | Qatar | ~22% | ~5.0 million tonnes |
| 3 | Kuwait | ~15–16% | ~3.4 million tonnes |
| 4 | Saudi Arabia | ~15% | ~3.3 million tonnes |
| 5 | USA | ~5–6% (growing) | ~1–1.2 million tonnes |
An analysis of the table shows that the Middle East supplies about 90–93% of India’s LPG imports, and most of the shipments reach India after passing through the Strait of Hormuz!

LPG crisis in long run
If things go as this and the battle continues, people will have to switch to electric stoves like induction cooktops and microwaves for cooking. However, there are chances that due to this sudden demand, their prices may spike!
Conclusion
The longer the war continues, the more pressure it will put on different countries of the world. First fuel, now LPG, India is facing new challenges every day.
